2000-09-15 Jose Luis Castillo drew 12 Steve Johnston, Pepsi Arena, Denver, Colorado, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 114-114, 114-114, 114-115. Initially the result was given as a win for Johnston (135), who was trying to regain the title he had lost to Castillo (134). However, on reading the cards again a mathematical error was discovered and a draw was announced. It had been another gruelling fight between the pair, with Johnston favouring long southpaw jabs and crosses and Castillo concentrating on left hooks to the body. While Johnston, who finished with a badly swollen right eye, had come into the contest knowing that his best chance lay in boxing at range, the fact that he had slowed appreciably and that Castillo had reach on him meant him boxing at close quarters for long periods. At the end of the ninth Johnston, ahead on the cards, was flagging and it was the Mexican’s surge over the last three rounds that ultimately enabled him to retain the title.
