2001-02-17 Takanori Hatakeyama drew 12 Rick Yoshimura, Ryogoku Sumo Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Ken Morita. Scorecards: 116-111, 112-115, 114-114. This was a tough defence for Hatakeyama (135) and if Yoshimura (135) hadn’t had a point deducted for excessive holding in the ninth round he would have lost his title. The 36-year-old Yoshimura held Hatakeyama at bay with an excellent jab for much of the time and it was only when the champion accelerated in the ninth through to the final bell that he got himself back in contention. Why Hatakeyama did not pick it up earlier was anyones guess, but when he did his two-fisted attacks were too much for Roberts to handle.
