2001-05-05 Joel Casamayor w pts 12 Edwin Santana, Silver Star Casino, Philadelphia, Mississippi, USA - WBA. Referee: Armando Garcia. Scorecards: 120-107, 120-107, 119-108. Despite fighting well above himself, the challenger was not in the same class as Casamayor (129) and in the second he struggled to survive, in what was a 10-8 round, as he was unceremoniously battered from pillar to post by solid southpaw blows. Somehow Santana (128) got through the pain and coming out for the third he had already decided that he would be better served speeding around the ring, while firing off punches occasionally. That he did for the rest of the bout as Casamayor vainly tried to bring him down and at the finish, regardless of the fact that he failed to win a round and had taken punishment all the way, he received warm applause for a plucky display.
