2001-06-23 Agapito Sanchez w rsc 7 Jorge Monsalvo, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Kenny Bayless. Contested for the vacant title following Marco Antonio Barrera’s decision to move up a weight class, Sanchez (121) proved too good an opponent for Monsalvo (122), who was outjabbed consistently and cracked by rights over the top. Sanchez, cut over the right eye in the third, was rarely under pressure and in the fourth he began to hand out a real battering to his game but outclassed rival. Thus it was no surprise when a big right sent Monsalvo crashing in the seventh, and when he got to his feet, wobbling all over the place, he was rescued by the referee on the 1.28 mark.

Due to defend against Joan Guzman in August 2002, Sanchez was forced to vacate after it was discovered that he had cataract problems.
