2001-09-29 Byron Mitchell w pts 12 Manuel Siaca, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Arthur Mecante (jnr). Scorecards: 114-112, 114-112, 112-115. This was a third title challenge for Siaca (167½) but he fell short yet again in what was a difficult fight to score, the judges only agreeing on three rounds. The champion made a good start when dropping Siaca in the opening session, a right to the head doing the trick, and dominated the second before the latter came back well in the third. From thereafter both men had their moments, but by the fifth Siaca was on the back foot, landing good counters as Mitchell (168) tried to close him down. By the ninth, with Siaca tiring, Mitchell went all out for the stoppage but after failing to put his man down he himself was floored in the 12th when caught by a left hook to the jaw. Although Siaca seemed to have Mitchell at his mercy when the latter rose he let the opportunity slip when not looking for the finish and ultimately paid for it.
