2001-11-03 Juan Carlos Gomez w rsc 6 Pietro Aurino, Hanse Hall, Lubeck, Germany - WBC. Referee: Mark Green. Outclassing his fellow-southpaw challenger in every round, Gomez (190) continued to part-dominate a weight division with a distinct paucity of talent. Dramatically outreached, Aurino (190) never had a chance and was dropped by a left cross to the head in the third prior to being floored three more times, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth. At 1.42 of the sixth the referee had seen enough and jumped in to rescue the embattled Aurino, who powerless to fight back.

Gomez relinquished his title in early March 2002 in order to campaign in the heavyweight division. To decide the vacancy, Wayne Braithwaite, who had beaten Louis Azille in an eliminator on 17 November, was matched against Vincenzo Cantatore, the WBC International champion.
