Never in with a chance at any stage of the contest Kelly (174½) was outclassed throughout and counted out at 1.55 of the seventh round after being dropped by a right to the head. Prior to that, Jones (172) had hurt his challenger badly in the second, knocked him down with a cracking left hook to the head in the third and almost had him over again in both the fourth and fifth before dropping him with a left to the body in the sixth. On 23 May at the Marcel Cerdan Sports Palace, Levallois-Perret, France, Bruno Girard defended the WBA ‘second tier’ title when outpointing Thomas Hansvoll over 12 rounds before retaining it when outscoring Lou Del Valle over 12 rounds on 13 July at the Cordoba Arena, Palavas, France.
