2002-04-13 Michele Piccirillo w pts 12 Cory Spinks, The Casino, Campione D’Italia, Italy - IBF. Referee: Rafael Argiolis. Scorecards: 116-111, 115-112, 115-112. Meeting for the title forfeited by Vernon Forrest, Spinks (146½) began behind the southpaw jab to win the opening two rounds, but by the third Piccirillo (147) had picked up the pace and was always dangerous with a solid right cross as he took the next four sessions. Having been cut on the right eye in the fifth and lost a point in the sixth for illegal use of the head Spinks was now behind, and although he came back strongly when outworking the Italian over the final round or so he was unable to make up the deficit.
