2002-05-18 Osamu Sato w co 8 Yoddamrong Sithyodthong, Super Arena, Saitama City, Japan - WBA. Referee: Guillermo Pineda. Making his first defence, Sithyodthong (122) made good his superior boxing skills right through to the sixth round as he jabbed and moved to pile up the points. The crowd were delighted in the seventh when Sato (121¼) tore up the form book to put Sithyodthong down for a count with an overarm right and repeated the dose at the end of the round, the bell coming to the champion’s rescue. Although Sithyodthong bravely rallied in the eighth, a vicious left to the body sent him slumping to the floor in some pain to be counted out at 1.58 of the round.
