2003-03-01 Roy Jones w pts 12 John Ruiz, Thomas & Mack Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Jay Nady. Scorecards: 117-111, 116-112, 118-110. Moving up from the light heavyweight division where he was still the WBA/WBC champion, Jones (193) was looking to add the WBA heavyweight title to his collection when taking on the champion, Ruiz (226). There were no knockdowns, but the much lighter Jones simply outclassed Ruiz in at least eight of the rounds, snapping in left jabs and left-rights to head and body before moving away. It was only when he took a breather that Ruiz did his best work, but he was never able to pin Jones down to do any damage and finished the fight minus his title, his pride dented and carrying a broken nose. Following this, Ruiz won the ‘interim’ title on 13 December, beating Hasim Rahman on points over 12 rounds at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was appointed champion in February 2004 after Roy Jones had moved back down to light heavyweight.
