2003-06-21 Lennox Lewis w rsc 6 Vitali Klitschko, Staples Centre, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC/The Ring. Referee: Lou Moret. Looking overweight and sluggish, Lewis (256½) turned in one of his worst championship performances and would surely have lost had it not been for Klitschko (248) suffering from an horrendous cut around his left eye from the third round, an injury which eventually necessitated 60 stitches. At the end of the sixth the doctor failed to let the challenger continue and the fight was called off, not going to the scorecards because the initial punch that did the damage was deemed to be legal.

When Lewis announced his retirement on 6 February 2004, Corrie Sanders was nominated to meet Klitschko for the vacant WBC title and The Ring Championship Belt.
