2003-08-16 Markus Beyer w disq 5 Danny Green, Nurburgring Formula One Racetrack, Nuremburg, Germany - WBC. Referee: Bill Clancy. Green made a great start when having the southpaw champion over in the opening two sessions from big right hooks, but also had a point deducted in the second when an accidental butt left Beyer (167½) badly cut over the right eye. Although Beyer came back refreshed in the third he was still being outworked by Green, but by the fourth he finally won a round when holding his boxing together. Still, the hard-punching Green was still ahead and was looking to win early, almost throwing Beyer to the floor in the fifth. By now Beyer was bleeding heavily and following another butt from Green that opened up a further cut on the champion’s right eye the referee was advised by the ringside doctor to stop the fight. At that point the butt was deemed to be intentional and instead of being handed the win, Green found himself on the end of a disqualification defeat, timed at 2.15 of the fifth. On 20 December 2003 at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Canada, Green stopped Eric Lucas in the sixth round and won the WBC ‘interim’ title in doing so. However, he would have to wait some 15 months before being given another crack at the title.
