In the early rounds, Makhmutov (111½) took the fight to the southpaw champion, but was countered for his pains as Narvaez (112) stayed close and landed telling punches. Having taken a clear lead by the middle rounds, Narvaez opened up with right hooks to head and body to floor Makhmutov in the ninth and following the tenth, a round in which Makhmutov took heavy punishment, the latter was retired by his corner.
