2004-02-28 [[Erik Morales]] w pts 12 [[Jesus Chavez]], MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Vic Drakulich. Scorecards: 118-108, 117-109, 115-112. Having been stunned in the opening round, the challenger regrouped to drop Chavez (130) twice in the second before the contest turned into a war of attrition as neither man was prepared to back down. Although both fighters were injured early on, Chavez damaging his right shoulder and Morales (130) his right hand, the action never slowed and in the fourth both were cut over their eyes, Chavez on his left side and Morales on the right. It was still exceptionally hard and each round was keenly contested, but as it wore on the quality was coming from Morales and at the finishing line he duly became a three-time champion.
