2004-03-27 Sven Ottke w pts 12 Armand Krajnc, Borderland Hall, Magdeburg, Germany - IBF/WBA. Referee: Armando Garcia. Scorecards: 120-108, 120-110, 119-109. Putting on his best performance for some time, the champion was soon threading in the jabs to head and body, with Krajnc (166½) having great difficulty in keeping up with his speed. Although Krajnc was having little joy, being outboxed round after round, he gave it a real go over the final three sessions but despite a valiant effort it bore no fruit.
Ottke announced his retirement from boxing immediately following the contest and, while the IBF title remained vacant, Anthony Mundine took over full recognition as the WBA champion. Meantime, the IBF set up two eliminating bouts between Syd Vanderpool v Tito Mendoza and Jeff Lacy v Vitaliy Tsypko. While Vanderpool outpointed Mendoza over 12 rounds on 17 April, the Lacy v Tsypko fight on 5 June was stopped at the end of the second round and declared a no-contest after the latter received a badly cut forehead. To allow the IBF title fight to go ahead it was Lacy who was selected to take on Vanderpool.
