2004-05-15 Antonio Tarver w rsc 2 Roy Jones, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA – WBC/The Ring. Referee: Jay Nady. With both men up for their return, Jones (174) boxed well to take the opening session, but coming in to the second it was clear that the southpaw challenger was relishing the battle ahead. Staying in the middle of the ring, Tarver (175) was happy for Jones to come to him and despite the latter being caught by the left a couple of times he failed to spot the warning signs. Having landed a solid right to the head and following up with a left hook, Jones was dropped heavily by an overarm left counter to the jaw. After just about making it to his feet before the count reached ‘ten’, Jones stumbled over yet again and although making it to his feet for the second time he was stopped on the 1.41 mark when the referee rightly stated that he was in no position to defend himself.
Having won The Ring magazine’s championship belt on winning, Tarver relinquished the WBC title in November in favour of taking on the dangerous Glen Johnson in a fight that would be recognised by The Ring as being for the world title.
