Line 1: Line 1:
31 July Rafael Marquez w rsc 3 Heriberto Ruiz, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Tony Weeks. With little happening following two rounds of inaction and the crowd preparing themselves for a long drawn out battle of wits, the contest was suddenly over. It came about in the third after the champion missed with a left hook and was countered by a similar punch from Ruiz (118). However, just as that was landing Ruiz was himself nailed by a tremendous right uppercut to the jaw from Marquez (118) that dropped him face down on the canvas. Although it was clearly a kayo, the referee did not even bother to count and immediately brought the contest to a conclusion in order that Ruiz could receive attention, the finish being timed at 2.11 of the session.
