It was reported on 4 October that Freitas had retired and that [[Graham Earl]] and [[Michael Katsidis]] would be contesting the vacant title, but a few weeks later Freitas rescinded his retirement plans and announced that he was fighting on. Following this, Katsidis met Earl for the vacant ‘interim’ title at The Arena, Wembley, London, England on 17 February 2007, winning by a fifth-round retirement.
