Even though Asloum was designated to be a ‘champion in recess’ due to inactivity on 18 July 2008, the WBA ran with an ‘interim’ champion after [[Giovani Segura]] outpointed [[Cesar Canchila]] over 12 rounds at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, on 26 July 2008. Segura successfully defended the WBA ‘interim’ title against the same opponent at the FEX Stockade, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico on 14 March 2009, when winning by a fourth-round stoppage, before being elevated to full championship status on 5 June 2009.
