Further to Mayweather’s announcement on 6 June 2008 that he was retiring, a forthcoming match between Andre Berto and Miguel Angel Rodriguez was recognised by the WBC as being for the vacant title. The Ring magazine’s version of the world title became vacant on 29 June.
