On 31 May 2008, Oscar Larios stopped Feider Viloria in the fifth round at the Convention Centre, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico to win the vacant WBC ‘interim’ title. On 2 August 2008, Larios successfully defended his honours when stopping Marlon Aguilar inside seven rounds at the Benito Juarez Auditorium, Zapapan, Jalisco, Mexico, and when Linares relinquished the WBC title on 13 August 2008 in order to fight at a higher weight and he was appointed as champion.
