Larios successfully defended his honours on 2 August 2008 when stopping [[Marlon Aguilar]] inside seven rounds at the Benito Juarez Auditorium, Zapapan, Jalisco, Mexico. When Linares relinquished the WBC title on 13 August 2008 in order to fight at a higher weight Larios was appointed champion.
