Following this, the WBC matched [[Edwin Valero]], who recently relinquished their junior lightweight title, against [[Antonio Pitalua]] for the vacant title. To get his opportunity, Pitalua had beaten [[Jose Armando Santa Cruz]] (w co 6 The Coliseum, Monterrey, Mexico on 20 September 2008) in an eliminator.
