After Adamek relinquished the IBF title on 18 October, having decided to fight in the heavyweight division, [[Steve Cunningham]] and [[Troy Ross]] were signed up to find a new champion. Since losing the IBF title to Adamek, Cunningham had beaten [[Wayne Braithwaite]] (w pts 12 at the BankAtlantic Centre, Sunrise, Florida on 11 July 2009) to win an eliminator and become the top- ranking fighter in ''The Ring'', while Ross was rated at number five in the same magazine.

After Adamek relinquished the IBF title on 18 October, having decided to fight in the heavyweight division, Steve Cunningham and Troy Ross were signed up to find a new champion. Since losing the IBF title to Adamek, Cunningham had beaten Wayne Braithwaite (w pts 12 at the BankAtlantic Centre, Sunrise, Florida on 11 July 2009) to win an eliminator and become the top- ranking fighter in The Ring, while Ross was rated at number five in the same magazine.
