2010-02-06 Edwin Valero w rtd 10 Antonio DeMarco, The Arena, Monterrey, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Laurence Cole. With the damage to his scalp requiring time to properly heal and having to spend some time in a psychiatric hospital, Valero was given the title of ‘Champion in Recess’ to allow a contest between Humberto Soto and David Diaz to go ahead for what I call the ‘second tier’ title. On 13 March, Soto duly outscored Diaz over 12 rounds at the Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas, USA. Soto became fully recognised by the WBC after Valero took his own life on 19 April, having murdered his wife a day earlier.
