Having already pulled out of a unification fight of sorts against Yuriorkis Gamboa on 27 July due to hand and shoulder problems, Rojas was forced to have surgery in August and would be out of action until at least early 2011. The WBC stated that Rojas, having been appointed ‘Champion in Recess’ on 28 August, would get first crack at the title once fully fit. Following that, it was announced that Hozumi Hasegawa and Juan Carlos Burgos would meet to decide the vacancy.
