2010-02-20 Elio Rojas w pts 12 Gustavo Espadas, Zamna Poliforum, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Hector Afu. Scorecards: 119-109, 119-109, 120-108. Having already pulled out of a unification fight of sorts against Yuriorkis Gamboa on 27 July due to hand and shoulder problems, Rojas was forced to have surgery in August and would be out of action until at least early 2011. At a WBC meeting on 4 November, it was stated that Rojas, as ‘Champion in Recess’, would effectively retain the title and would defend against the winner of a contest between Hozumi Hasegawa and Juan Carlos Burgos once fully fit. On this basis the contest between Hasegawa and Burgos, won by the former on points over 12 rounds, at the Nihon Gaishi Hall, Nagoya, Japan on 26 November should be seen as involving the ‘second tier’ title. On 8 April 2011, Jhonny Gonzalez stopped Hozumi Hasegawa in the fourth round at the World Memorial Hall, Kobe, Japan to take over the ‘second tier’ crown. With Rojas yet to return to the ring, Gonzalez stopped Tomas Villa in the fourth round of their contest at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA on 9 July to retain the WBC ‘second tier’ title and went on to make a further successful defence when stopping Rogers Mtagwa in the second round of their contest at the County Coliseum, El Paso, Texas, USA on 15 September.
