2011-12-17 Andre Ward w pts 12 Carl Froch, Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA/WBC/The Ring. Referee: Steve Smoger. Scorecards: 115-113, 115-113, 118-110.

As well as the WBA and WBC titles being at stake, The Ring Championship Belt was also up for grabs in this one.

On 18 February 2012, Brian Magee successfully defended his WBA ‘interim’ title with a fifth-round stoppage win over Rudy Markussen at the Brondby Hall Arena, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Karoly Balzsay made a successful defence of the WBA ‘second tier’ title when stopping Dimitri Sartison in the 12th round at the Sport & Congress Centre, Schwerin, Germany on 21 April 2012.

The WBC announced on 27 April 2012 that they were giving Ward ‘Champion in Recess’ status on the grounds that he had broken his hand last time out and it needed to heal. Although there had been rumours that Ward was considering giving up the WBA and WBC belts, believing that the Ring belt was far more prestigious and was not really interested in defending against Anthony Dirrell, with two months left to make a defence the WBC’s actions were surprising to say the least. All of that was forgotten when he signed up to defend all three belts against Chad Dawson in September 2012.
