The 108lbs weight class was introduced in 1975 by the World Boxing Council, who finally recognised that some fighters, especially in the Far-East and Mexico, were just too light to take on fully-fledged flyweights. Within a matter of months the World Boxing Association also accepted the need for the weight class and followed the WBC’s example in setting up championship fights at the weight. It is also known as the light flyweight division
