[[1993-10-30 Verno Phillips w rsc 7 Lupe Aquino, America West Arena, Phoenix, Arizona, USA - WBO]]. Referee: Al Munoz. Contested for the title vacated by John David Jackson, Aquino (154) got away to a good start when dropping Phillips (151½) in the opening session before gradually being outworked and suffering a broken nose in the fifth. Matters went from bad to worse in the sixth as Phillips handed out a real shellacking, and after 57 seconds of the seventh had elapsed the fight was stopped when a dejected Aquino turned his back on his opponent just as his handlers were entering the ring. At the time of the stoppage, the scores in favour of Phillips read 58-55, 57-56, 57-57.

Recognised by the amateurs since 1951, because the weight gap between welter and middle was too great the 147 to 154lbs weight class was introduced to the pro ranks in 1962 thanks to the World Boxing Association. Men boxing in this division are also known as super welterweights or light middleweights

However, before the WBA could get a vacant title contest between Denny Moyer and Joey Giambra underway the Austrian Boxing Commission supported a bout between America’s Ted Wright and Emile Griffith, the world welterweight champion who was having difficulty making 147lbs, as being for their version of the championship. Although the Austrians had hoped to get the support of the EBU and the NYSAC, unable to do so they ultimately went it alone
