The Ring (July 1943, page 59, in an article by Milt Baron, reported that "Lazaro Diaz, Cuba's heavyweight champion, scored an eight-round knockout over Giraldo Valdes in a hotly fought contest. Valdes showed lot of class and was ahead on points, but he just forgot to duck one of Lazaro's nasty wallops on the chin." A search of Diario de la Marina by Jack Kincaid failed to turn up a knockout win for Diaz, but instead a 7-round knockout by Valdes of Diaz. Valdes's record in The Ring Record Book, in various editions such as for 1955, lists only the fight shown here, which was reported in Diario de la Marina. The conclusion is that Diaz never scored a knockout of Valdes in 1943, and that result has been deleted. Baron may have confused the result of the fight of 04-03-43 with the result of the Diaz-Valdes fight of 05-30-42.
