1896-05-11Jimmy Reeder4-0-1
Eden Musee, Altoona, Pennsylvania, USALKO310
Reported in the 3/22/1966 issue of the Altoona Mirror. The writer reported seeing Reeder in his latter years reading the newspaper report of this bout and that it was dated 5/11/1886. The editor believes that the writer got the date right but the year wrong. Marshall was in Australia in 1886 (but in PA in 1896) and Reeder claimed in interviews to have started fighting in 1890.
1896-04-27George Plante4-0-1
Homestead, Pennsylvania, USAWDQ610
referee: Ed Reilly
Results from the Pittsburgh Press. There were "ugly rumors afloat" before the match as to a possible fix. Plante was dominating the fight until the sixth, when Marshall bent low and grabbed Plante by the knees. Plante launched an uppercut just as Marshall dropped to a knee. The blow landed on Marshall's shoulder. Referee Reilly disqualified Plante, who in turn "said something hard" in return. Reilly swung on Plante and hit Plante on the shoulder. Then John Finnegan and Mike Lewis, who were in Plante's corner, joined the fray. Finnegan swung and missed but Lewis hit Reilly with a terrific blow and floored him. The police interceded.
