It was suspected that a fix was on, and the Club's president instructed the referee after the 2nd round to announce that all bets on the result were off. "After the eighteenth round the contest grew decidedly uninteresting, and from the twenty-fourth to the thirty-fourth and last round neither man landed a blow. The referee had cautioned them that unless they made some attempt at fighting he would declare the match "no contest," and that neither man would receive a cent." (SF Morning Call)
