Early in the first round Mackey shot a wicked right to Houck's jaw, he went down hard with his head hitting the floor with an awful thump. He was counted out, but staggered to his feet and asked to be permitted to continue. The referee nodded assent, eight seconds later Mackey landed a left which sent him away again. Houck crawled to his corner, after a two minute confab with his trainers, signified his desire to continue. In the sixth, he took a left and right to the jaw and was out for fifteen minutes.
