Bonner or someone behind him applied oil of mustard to his gloves which blinded West, and almost overcame Referee Charley White. White said "I'm on. Go to your corner." Then followed with, "You're a dirty cur for playing a trick like that" and striking him on the jaw. The police intervened, with Bonner being scared half to death and dazed. Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Two days later Bonner says, "through a misunderstanding a druggist gave his trainer mustard oil in it's raw form instead of the essence, which was ordered." He almost fainted when it was rubbed on his arm between the seventh and eighth rounds. Brooklyn Daily Eagle
