According to Boxing News, December 12, 1951, page 10, Curvis was ahead on points and shook Womber badly near the end of the fourth round. The bell to end the round sounded and Womber "continued the fight and in the flurry that followed struck what appeared to be a low blow. The referee separated the pair and awarded Curvis the decision." Womber later claimed to have not heard the bell.
