This was Edgar's last fight. An eye examination showed that he had cataracts in both eyes and would have gone blind if he had continued his career in the ring.

1946-06-13Jake LaMotta58-10-2
University of Detroit Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USADPTS1010
referee: Sam Hennessey | judge: Joe Lenahan | judge: Frank Fisher
Hennessey scored it 50-50 on points; Fisher favored Edgar 52-48; and Lenahan picked LaMotta 53-47. It was an intense battle held in 52 F weather. Nearly everyone at ringside thought that LaMotta had won and a scoring error was suspected, but a recount failed to locate a mistake. The Detroit News had LaMotta winning seven rounds to three. "It was the sort of fight that invites scoring differences. There were no knockdowns, no developments that could be cited as conclusive evidence that one man or the other was entitled to preference. It was simply a bruising brawl in the pattern of the two previous engagements between the same contestants."

1943-01-01Jake LaMotta27-5-2
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USALSD1010
referee: Sam Hennessey | judge: Frank Neville | judge: Joe Lenahan
Edgar's boxing style was similar to that of Joe Louis; "both of them seek fistic success by standing flat-footed and raking their opponents with hard counter-punches..Neither bothers much with clever footwork. They are offensive fighters who depend upon power for their victories." LaMotta prefers to put his head down, tuck his chin in and charge into his opponents..He threw Edgar off balance and took the sting out of his punches. Edgar didn't have the footwork to get away from him; he had to stand his ground and punch with Jake, and that was what LaMotta wanted." There were no knockdowns but Edgar was hurt in round four and tired in the last three rounds. Even so, judge Frank Neville voted for him, but Referee Sam Hennessey and Judge Joe Lenahan scored it for LaMotta.

This was a sensational fight. "Edgar kept beating off the persistent rushes of the Bronxite." LaMotta opened up in the seventh round and kept up a pace that Edgar could not match. LaMotta won, but Edgar had a big disadvantage in the weight, considering which his showing was remarkable.

The referee stopped the bout after Patterson was down for the third time in the round.
