Gains's chief second, Jack Goodwin, suffered a heart attack as the fighters went to their corners at the end of the 13th round, collapsed and died. "The referee's decision was greeted with boos from all parts of the hall, although Gains had floored the South African champion for counts of eight and nine in the ninth round."

time: 2:30
This bout only lasted for two and a half minutes, but that was time enough for Gains to inflict considerable punishment on the Swiss champion, who sustained, among other injuries a broken nose. Discovering the weakness of Baumann's defense at the outset, Gains knocked him down for a count of six. As soon as he got to his feet, he was floored for the full count amid a volley of rights and lefts to the head and body.
