Poreda "was outpointed in every round. In the ninth he was knocked down and stayed down so long Kennedy's seconds climbed through the ropes to claim victory. The referee turned them back, insisting he had not finished his count when Poreda rose. A few seconds later the bell ended the round." He was groggy at the start of the final stanza and "Kennedy made short work of him." New York Times

1929-09-20Tim Derry5-2-2
Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USAWKO68
Derry had often found it difficult to move about in the ring with shoes on. At least up to late 1929 he merely wore a heavy pair of socks, or sometimes fought in his bare feet. The rules of the Illinois State Athletic Commission at the time required boxers to wear "proper athletic apparel," but said nothing about shoes. A controversy arose before this bout when Kennedy demanded that Derry wear shoes for their bout. Whether Derry actually did wear shoes is unknown at present.
