referee: Joe Coffey
Root won an unpopular decision based on his greater aggression in forcing the action. Russell had Root in serious trouble in round 4, but Root recovered and had Russell cut up and taking a count in round 7. Root landed more often but Russell landed the harder blows. Root later admitted he hadn't trained enough and was well over his usual weight.

Vacant World Heavyweight Title
Scheduled as a finish fight -- Hart down in round 7, Root in round 12 -- James J. Jeffries "awarded" the Title to Hart, although in later years denied having done so.

From the beginning the bout looked like a fake one. During the fourth round, Root knocked Ryan down with a light punch. It looked like Ryan was dazed. Referee McGuigan declared the bout to be fake and left the ring. The fighters had to be escorted through the crowd. Los Angeles Times

World Light-Heavyweight Title
Although billed merely for the American title, some recognize this bout as being the first World Light Heavyweight Title contest.
McCoy was floored in the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and 9th rounds. In all he was down 7 times and saved by the bell at the end of the second round.
In the ninth, McCoy's brother sprayed Root in the face with ammonia while the two clinched near McCoy's corner.

Contest billed in the Salt Lake Herald for the Middleweight and Light heavyweight championship of the world. A very close fight right to the end with Root boxing and Gardner slugging mainly to the body. Root later said his left hand was broken in the second round, forcing him to rely more on his right. Root down three times in 17th, the final time from a wild blow to the stomach. Both were warned repeatedly by Referee Hynds for blatant fouls.[Salt Lake Herald] Both entered the ring at close to 160 lbs.-- A wire report by Scripps erroneously reported that Root died following this bout.

"In the fifth round both men were fighting strong, with the advantage in Root's favor, when Carter swung a hard left on his opponent's body. Root went down on his back, his features contorted with pain, his hands clutching his groin. Referee Wand gave the fight to Root saying Carter had struck a foul blow. The foul, if any, was not apparent to the spectators." (Durango Democrat) Actually, the bout did go 15 rounds according to the San Francisco Call.
