referee: James Darrell
This was a sparring match with large gloves. Bout is for "scientific points." Police Captain Hayes was present to make sure no slugging was done. The first blow was not struck until the third round when Kelly landed lightly on the mouth. The next five rounds were "absorbed in fanning the air" until Kelly landed several stinging blows. The Captain halted the bout at that point, but was persuaded to let them finish the ten rounds and the referee awarded the contest to Kelly. Source: The Evening Journal (Hoboken, NJ).
