1939-09-11Clarence Brown8-4-4
Marigold Gardens Outdoor Arena, Chicago, Illinois, USADMD1010
Franklin landed heavily in the first two rounds and wore himself out. Brown outboxed him after that. The referee voted for Franklin, one judge for a draw, and the other marked his ballot "no contest," for some reason. Evidently this was interpreted as a vote for a draw.
1939-04-13Tony Musto23-2-0

According to Bob Soderman, the report of this fight in the Chicago Tribune was rather skimpy. Presumably Musto wore Franklin down with in-fighting; at least he did so for the first six rounds.

Franklin's pro debut. His published record does not include a fight on this date, but includes an erroneous fight with Williams on November 3. Franklin had won the International Amateur Heavyweight Championship, beating Herman Runge of Germany earlier in the year. Williams was very cagy and fought in a shell to take the decision. Franklin landed his first hard, clean punch in round six and it broke Williams's nose.
