St. Paul Daily Globe 11-11-1885. Curtis later tried to claim he won this fight on a foul, but this was not proved to be the case. A prominent sportsman of Eau Claire who witnessed the fight said that the Curtis fought as if terrified by Cardiff and as Cardiff drove him into a corner, Curtis tried to call "foul" claiming Cardiff kneed him in the groin. The referee, who was a friend of Curtis, acknowledged the foul, but ruled it accidental. Curtis refused to accept that ruling and claimed he could not fight anymore. Fight was then given to Cardiff.
