McLarnin broke his right hand in the first round, and was nearly disqualified after being warned by Referee Crowley six times for low blows and back-hand punches. Thompson had McLarnin in a bad way in the fifth round and Jimmy hit him low three times in that round alone. The Associated Press gave McLarnin five rounds (1,3,4, 8, 9), Thompson three (2,5.7) and had the 6th and 10th even. Thompson went to McLarnin's dressing room after the bout and congratulated him. McLarnin was expected to be out of commission for two months because of his injury.
