According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, it was surprising that Referee Al Wambsganss called this a "no contest." It had been a very fast fight for four rounds after which Barrere tired, and held. (Also he was suffering from a hand injury.) Koster continued to land at every opportunity and the referee's ruling was a disservice to him.

Fowler was having his first fight after being discharged from the navy. He gave Koster a thrashing in the last six rounds. Despite this, Koster was so enraged at the referee's decision that he floored him with a right to the jaw. Afterwards, he and his manager were deeply apologetic. (New Orleans Times-Picayune)
