Fought at 145 pounds. Kennedy was unable to defend himself and being pounded against the ropes when the fight was stopped. He protested the stoppage, claiming he had a lot left. "Before the battle there was a dispute over the bandages worn by Matthews, who had his hands and wrists covered with long strips, which he refused to remove. After a lengthy argument, Kennedy settled the matter by swathing his hands in a like fashion and they got together." - Globe & Mail.

Welterweight Championship of the World
"On points, Matthews was a winner up to the time that the bout came to an unexpected termination. In the tenth and final round he lost a little of his caution and left an opening, which the Rube availed himself of. A left to the jaw dazed the champion, another another on the same spot floored him. Disdaining to take the count he got up quickly to his feet, but he was all at sea and when he stabbed blindly at Ferns with a left the latter stepped back, and as Matthews stumbled towards him crossed the right to the jaw and the champion went down for the long count." - Globe & Mail

The fighters weighed in at 3 PM. Ferns entered the bout with sores on his shoulder that had become infected a couple weeks earlier - these opened up and bled during the fight. "It was a hammer-and-tongs affair, in which Matthews not only outgeneraled, but outfought the champion, and barring a protest by Chaley Wilson, manager of Ferns, the verdict was generally accepted as the only one it was possible for the referee to give. During the progress of the fight there were but two rounds in which the champion could be said to have the better of the fistic argument, while in eight rounds Matty clearly outpointed and outfought his man. The other five were very even." - Detroit Free Press.

referee: Malachy Hogan
Welterweight Championship of the World
"...Rube Ferns demonstrated that he is a hard hitting, game and dangerous man and clearly entitled to the honor which he now holds, that of welterweight champion. While he failed to put Matty Matthews away and did not win by as large a majority as his supporters desired, he had the better of the bout, beyond doubt, and now stands at the head of the welter list with his claim to the title of champion clearly established... Ferns was the aggressor all through the fight, did most of the leading and all of the forcing, in addition to landing frequently on Matthews' body. As limited-round bouts are to be decided on points, Ferns clearly won, although Johnny Dunn, manager of Matthews, raced around the city declaring that his man had been robbed. The honesty of Malachy Hogan is unquestioned, so even if Matthews was entitled to a draw, Dunn did not pursue a wise course, to say the least." Bo Needham, Detroit Free Press, September 2, 1900
