It had been a very good fight up to that point, and Bennett tried to talk the Deputy out of stopping it, but his mind could not be changed. The fighters began arguing with each other after the stoppage, and had to be pulled apart by their seconds. Fought at 126lbs. The bout was close, until McClelland dropped Oleson with a right hand about two minutes into the 16th round. "McClelland forced Oleson to the ropes. The Swede was cornered. He tried to side-step out of danger. Jack feinted with his left and then, with terrific force, brought the right over to the jaw and Oleson was down like a log." - Globe & Mail. The spectators prevented Oleson from rolling right out of the ring, and he managed to beat the count, before being dropped two more times. Oleson dragged himself up using the ropes after the third knockdown, but Referee Bennett had seen enough.

Referee Bennett gave his decision based on the action up to that point. After the bout, Leonard's manager explained that it was the first time his fighter had competed under "Canadian Rules." Buffalo Courier reports- McClelland "outpointed" Leonard, after the bout was stopped by police. The men were "fighting too roughly."
