1921-03-19Dencio Cabanela31-4-5
Sydney Stadium, Sydney, New South Wales, AustraliaWKO1420x2
referee: Joe Wallis
A doctor who examined Cabanela after this first bout in Australia had suspected a blood clot in the brain, and had ordered bed rest after the fight. As to the fight itself, the first two rounds were even as the opponents felt each other out. Criqui won the third, but after that to the end he suffered terrible punishment. Criqui was not knocked off his feet, but his face was badly marked up and he had to withstand round after round of battering. The Sydney Morning Herald, from which an account has been seen, thought that Criqui finally knocked out Cabanela in round 14 although the blow was not seen. It was only later that it was suspected that Cabanela was suffering from a brain injury.
