judge: Chabannes | judge: James Sparks | judge: Carlo Lomazzi
IBU World (1913 - 1946) bantamweight title
When Judge Dr. James Sparks, commander of the American Legion in France, cast a vote for Brown, a riot broke out among the fans (who thought hometown boxer Francis had won), and Sparks was badly beaten up. Several hundred gendarmes were required to save him. Sparks had agreed with the French judge, while the Italian judge favored Francis. The match was officially declared "no contest" because Sparks's score card had been destroyed by the mob before he could hand it in. The next day the IBU awarded the bout to Brown. "A crowd of 7890 fight fans, paying gross receipts of $23,420, saw LaBarba, admittedly one of the greatest little ring men of this era, subject Francis to a baffling exhibition of boxing skill in the 1st round of their tilt, ride successfully through the storm of savage drives to the body and head which Francis unleashed in four succeeding rounds, and comeback with an exhibition of boxing which bewildered his rival."
