LaMotta won the first round, but Cerdan took the second and the third was even. LaMotta damaged his left hand in the fifth round, but even in the ninth round he landed 104 blows, whereas Cerdan was scarcely throwing a punch. ~ referee: Sam Hennessey | judge: Joe Lenahan | judge: Frank Fisher ~
Hennessey scored it 50-50 on points; Fisher favored Edgar 52-48; and Lenahan picked LaMotta 53-47. It was an intense battle held in 52 F weather. Nearly everyone at ringside thought that LaMotta had won and a scoring error was suspected, but a recount failed to locate a mistake. The Detroit News had LaMotta winning seven rounds to three. "It was the sort of fight that invites scoring differences. There were no knockdowns, no developments that could be cited as conclusive evidence that one man or the other was entitled to preference. It was simply a bruising brawl in the pattern of the two previous engagements between the same contestants."

Attendance: 14,755; Gate: $74,434. Robinson's best round was the sixth. LaMotta rallied furiously in the 9th, 10th, and 11th rounds. "The fight followed the usual pattern (of the previous four fights between the two), Robinson flashing style in the early heats, then coasting when he could. Jake set out in pursuit at the opening bell and bored in with bulldog tenacity throughout." The decision was disputed. Afterward, Robinson said "This was the toughest fight I've ever had with LaMotta."

~ referee: Walter Brightmore ~
Costner started fast and would have won the first round but for a no-count knockdown. LaMotta took charge in the second. Costner changed his tactics in the third round and fled before LaMotta's advances, landing left jabs and brief flurries, but not able to evade Jake's body attack. George started to tire in round four. LaMotta let up in the fifth, but mounted a murderous attack in the sixth. Costner became an easy target and was dropped for a nine-count midway of the round. His left eye was closed and he was trying to quit when he arose, but LaMotta knocked him down again before the referee could stop him. Costner was counted out. Attendance was 11,115 and the gross receipts were $45,485.

Zivic damaged his left hand in the first round, but declined to use it as an excuse for his defeat. It was an exciting fight with lots of action. There were no knockdowns but both fighters were shaken up several times. LaMotta's best rounds were the 6th and the 10th.

"LaMotta, a human windmillcould not get started as Zivic kept him continuously off balance through the early rounds with a left jab. Zivic was the boxing master through the first nine rounds and only in the 2nd and 7th did LaMotta gain an edge. After the 9th the veteran couldn't hold the heavier puncher but it was apparently a fast rally in the final round that gave him the decision."

1943-03-19159½Jimmy Reeves159¾23-8-0
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, United StatesWKO610
It was a close fight for five rounds, a fierce struggle that kept the fans in an uproar. Reeves kept inside LaMotta's swings and jarred Jake with right and left uppercuts to the head. But he slugged it out with LaMotta in round four, a hint that he was tiring and becoming desperate. In the sixth, Reeves was floored for a one-count by a left to the head, but didn't seem unduly hurt when he arose. Then LaMotta unloaded a left to the chin and Reeves went down on his face. He tried to get up but was still on the floor, blinking his eyes and shaking his head, when the referee counted ten.
1943-02-26160¾Sugar Ray Robinson14541-1-0
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, United StatesLUD1010
~ referee: Sam Hennessey | judge: Frank Fisher | judge: Joe Lenahan ~
Referee Hennessey had Robinson winning 51-49 points (5-3-2 in rounds); Fisher gave it to Robinson 53-47 (6-2-2 in rounds); Lenahan scored it for Robinson 56-44 (8-1-1 in rounds). Robinson was floored for a nine-count in round seven and said later "He really hurt me with a left in the seventh round. I was a little dazed and decided to stay on the deck.." Robinson's best round was the fourth in which he hurt LaMotta. It was a polished performance for Robinson, who outboxed LaMotta most of the way with a dazzling left jab and jarring uppercuts..
1943-02-05160½Sugar Ray Robinson144½40-0-0
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, United StatesWUD1010
~ referee: Sam Hennessey 52-47 | judge: Michael H. Butler 57-49 | judge: Joe Lenahan 55-45 ~
Robinson was knocked down through the ropes in the eighth, being saved by the bell at the count of nine, after taking a right to the head and a left to the body. Referee Hennessey gave LaMotta five rounds including the last four. He gave Robinson four and called one even. Two other judges gave the same scores. The much heavier LaMotta charged Robinson at every opportunity with bull-like rushes. Robinson tried to outbox his shorter opponent but had a lot of trouble keeping him at bay.
1943-01-22160Charley Hayes15811-0-0
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, United StatesWTKO610
Hayes was floored four an eight-count in the second round. After that he held LaMotta off until the sixth. In the sixth, Hayes was floored with a left to the body and the referee stopped the fight in with just three seconds remaining in the round. Hayes's manager, Lee Jones, claimed a foul, but an examination failed to turn up evidence of a low blow.
1943-01-15161California Jackie Wilson14546-4-2
Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, United StatesWPTS1010
According to Dan Parker of the New York Mirror, Wilson did well in the first two rounds, but after that he "couldn't keep away from his leaning, mauling opponent. LaMotta would pin Wilson in a corner with his right, then shifting, would belabor him tirelessly with lefts." Parker considered the fight to be unfair to Wilson because of the large difference in weight and strength of the two fighters.
1943-01-01161½Jimmy Edgar19-1-0
Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, United StatesWSD1010
~ referee: Sam Hennessey | judge: Frank Neville | judge: Joe Lenahan ~
Edgar's boxing style was similar to that of Joe Louis; "both of them seek fistic success by standing flat-footed and raking their opponents with hard counter-punches..Neither bothers much with clever footwork. They are offensive fighters who depend upon power for their victories." LaMotta prefers to put his head down, tuck his chin in and charge into his opponents..He threw Edgar off balance and took the sting out of his punches. Edgar didn't have the footwork to get away from him; he had to stand his ground and punch with Jake, and that was what LaMotta wanted." There were no knockdowns but Edgar was hurt in round four and tired in the last three rounds. Even so, judge Frank Neville voted for him, but Referee Sam Hennessey and Judge Joe Lenahan scored it for LaMotta.
